Opposition Moves Motion to Remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee/ 9th March 2026

A major political confrontation unfolded in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Budget Session as opposition parties moved a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla, triggering a heated debate in Parliament.

The motion was introduced by Congress MP Mohamed Jawed and supported by several opposition leaders, including K. Suresh and Mallu Ravi. The resolution accuses the Speaker of failing to maintain neutrality in conducting proceedings and alleges that opposition members have not been given fair opportunities to raise issues in the House.

Opening the debate, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the opposition had been compelled to bring the motion to safeguard the dignity of Parliament. He argued that the functioning of the House had been affected by repeated interruptions during important discussions and claimed that opposition voices were often not given adequate space in debates.

The resolution marks a rare development in parliamentary history, as motions seeking the removal of a Lok Sabha Speaker are uncommon. According to parliamentary procedure, once such a motion is admitted for debate, the Speaker does not preside over the House during the discussion.

The debate has been allotted several hours, allowing members from both the ruling alliance and the opposition to present their arguments before the motion is put to a vote. The development has intensified political tensions during the Budget Session, with both sides preparing for a prolonged confrontation in Parliament.
