On Monday, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day due to opposition protests over suspicions of a George Soros-Congress link and the Adani problem, which caused frequent disruptions.
When the House reconvened at 11 a.m. following the weekend, the opposition members were on their feet, attempting to raise their concerns. A clearly angry Speaker Om Birla urged the MPs to return to their seats and allow the House to function.
Opposition members yelled shouts such as “Modi Sarkar down down,” “Modi Sarkar shame shame,” and “we want justice,” as BJP member SandhOpposition members from the TMC and RJD were seen supporting the rally. TMC members such as Saugatha Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, and Mahua Moitra were sitting in their seats.
SP member Dharmendra Yadav also brought up the problem of farmers. He was heard stating, “Pure desh ka kisan pareshan hai”.Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, was present in the House throughout the protests. After the parliamentary papers were tabled, Ray informed the House that Birla was considering notices issued by Congress leaders.
“Question Hour is significant. Allow the House to function properly. But you don’t want to allow the House to run. The country wants the House to run. You are disrupting the proceedings of the House,” he told the protesting members and adjourned the House till 12 noon.
The loud protests caused another adjournment until 2 p.m., then 3 p.m., before the hearings concluded for the day. As soon as the House reconvened at noon, Congress members marched into the Lok Sabha’s well and raised anti-government slogans. They were quickly joined by Samajwadi Party members.
Congress members were also heard claiming that they had filed notices to move a privilege motion against BJP member Nishikant Dubey for attempting to link Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to US-based billionaire George Soros-backed organizations allegedly involved in anti-India activities.
As the demonstrations continued, the Chair postponed the proceedings until 2 p.m., but the scenes remained unchanged when the House reconvened. Ray, who was in the chair, requested Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnav to respond to the Rail (Amendment) Bill 2024. However, opposition demonstrations persisted, prompting another hour-long adjournment.
The opposition remained unyielding, and Ray adjourned the House for the day after it reassembled at 3. The House’s activities were halted during the first week of the winter session, which began on November 25, due to protests by opposition members demanding discussion of matters such as industrialist Gautam Adani’s indictment in a US court and Sambhal violence.
Last week, the House only worked correctly on two days: Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, BJP member Nishikant Dubey attempted to link a foreign investor to a group of opposition politicians, alleging an international conspiracy to ruin India’s success story under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress lawmaker Gaurav Gogoi and others attempted to rebut Dubey’s charges, causing chaos and adjournment of the House.
