He mentioned that the Pakistani team maintained a low profile as best as they could but did not appreciate the capability of India’s intelligence network in Bangladesh, which successfully uncovered their presence and even discovered their flight details, including arrival and departure times. The ex-diplomat advised the Yunus administration in Dhaka to “take note” of this situation and enhance efforts to diminish India’s intelligence presence in Bangladesh.
Basit’s remarks were made following reciprocal visits by high-ranking military officials from Pakistan and Bangladesh to each other’s nations in under a week. A six-member delegation from Bangladesh, headed by Lt General SM Kamrul Hassan, the principal staff officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division, undertook a four-day trip to Pakistan from January 13-18. During this visit, they allegedly engaged with Islamabad’s senior military leaders in Rawalpindi, including Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir.
Just a week later, a group of high-ranking officials from the Pakistan Army and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) – the notorious spy agency of Islamabad – landed in Dhaka for a four-day trip on January 21.
The four-person delegation, said to be led by ISI chief Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik, also comprised Major General Alam Amir Awan and Major General Shahid Amir Afsar— the chief of analysis for ISI, who was previously Pakistan’s defense attache in Beijing.
Basit stated that the ISI delegation’s trip was a “routine visit” and not a worry for India, while also expressing astonishment that New Delhi chose to monitor the situation closely.

Relations between India and Bangladesh have reached a historic low following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with a transitional government led by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus taking charge in Dhaka. Extensive communal violence targeting minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, has strained Dhaka’s relationship with New Delhi, which has criticized the Yunus-led interim government for insufficient action and ignoring the abuses committed by extremist Islamist groups against the minority Hindu population in the nation.
