Pakistan Suspends Simla Agreement in Retaliation Against India’s Indus Waters Move

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 27th April 2025

In a sharp response to India’s actions following the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has announced the suspension of the 1972 Simla Agreement. According to Pakistani news outlet Dawn, the move is part of a series of retaliatory steps, including the closure of the Wagah border for trade, cancellation of Saarc visa exemptions for Indian citizens, and expulsion of Indian military diplomats, who have been declared persona non grata.

The decision was made during a two-hour meeting of Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC), the country’s highest authority on national security. While expressing sympathy for the victims of the Pahalgam attack, the committee rejected India’s countermeasures as “unilateral, unjustified, politically motivated, and lacking legal basis.”

The Simla Agreement, signed after the 1971 India-Pakistan war, established the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and committed both countries to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue. With Pakistan’s suspension of the agreement, a major diplomatic framework between the two nations has now been shelved.
