The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu attention of a media report stating that a 58-year-old woman died as a result of the authorities’ failure to maintain the lift at a Super Speciality Hospital in Jammu. She reportedly suffered severe injuries as she walked into the hospital elevator, which suddenly began to rise quickly.

The Commission has noted that, if accurate, the news report’s contents raise grave concerns about the victim woman’s human rights being violated. As a result, it has sent letters to the UT of Jammu & Kashmir’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police for a thorough report on the subject within two weeks.

The media report from November 6, 2025, stated that it took almost fifteen minutes to get her out of the elevator. Her relatives claimed that neither a lift operator nor a security officer were there, citing the hospital’s incompetence. Additionally, they claimed that no warning signs regarding the technical problems with the faulty lift were displayed by the authorities. Before passing away from her wounds, the victim battled for five days in the intensive care unit.
