Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded Oman’s highest civilian honour during his official visit to the Gulf nation, marking a significant moment in India–Oman relations. The prestigious award places Modi among a select group of global leaders, including Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II, who have previously received the same recognition.

The honour was conferred by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said in recognition of Modi’s contribution to strengthening diplomatic, economic and cultural ties between India and Oman. Officials described the gesture as a reflection of the deep mutual respect between the two countries and their shared commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. The award adds to the growing list of international honours received by the Prime Minister during his tenure.

Modi’s visit to Oman coincides with seven decades of diplomatic relations between the two nations. India and Oman share longstanding historical links rooted in trade, maritime exchange and cultural interaction. Over the years, the relationship has evolved into a broad-based partnership covering trade, energy, defence, education and people-to-people connections. Indian expatriates form a significant and well-regarded community in Oman, further strengthening bilateral ties.

During the visit, the Prime Minister held wide-ranging discussions with Omani leadership, focusing on boosting economic collaboration and exploring new avenues for investment. Talks included enhancing cooperation in areas such as energy security, renewable resources, infrastructure development and technology. Both sides expressed interest in expanding trade volumes and encouraging greater private-sector participation.

Regional and global developments were also part of the discussions, with leaders emphasising the importance of stability, dialogue and cooperation in the Gulf and the wider Indian Ocean region. India and Oman have traditionally maintained close coordination on regional security matters, reflecting shared strategic interests. Modi also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, acknowledging their role in strengthening ties and contributing to Oman’s development while acting as a bridge between the two countries.

The conferment of Oman’s highest civilian honour is being seen as a symbolic affirmation of India’s growing diplomatic footprint in the Gulf region. It underscores Oman’s appreciation of India as a reliable partner and reflects the importance both countries place on their relationship amid changing global dynamics. Officials said the visit and the award are expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation and set the stage for deeper engagement in the coming years.
