Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two major highway projects aimed at decongesting Delhi and improving regional connectivity—the Dwarka Expressway’s Delhi section and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). The projects, worth nearly ₹11,000 crore, are expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease traffic flow across the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Dwarka Expressway, a 10.1 km stretch in Delhi, includes a 5.1 km tunnel that directly connects to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Built at an estimated cost of ₹5,360 crore, it is set to cut travel time to the airport from areas like Noida and West Delhi to under 20 minutes.
The UER-II project, considered Delhi’s third ring road, covers 76 km, of which 54 km lies within the Capital and the rest in Haryana. Four packages of the road, costing about ₹6,445 crore, were opened on Sunday. Once fully operational, it will divert heavy traffic away from congested routes such as Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-9, while providing faster connectivity to Punjab, Chandigarh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
Apart from boosting mobility, the projects are expected to accelerate real estate development along the Dwarka–UER-II corridor. Authorities also highlighted the sustainable approach adopted in UER-II’s construction, which used nearly one million metric tonnes of inert waste sourced from biomining landfills.
The inauguration ceremony was held in Rohini around 12:30 pm, with extensive traffic diversions in place across West and North Delhi. Commuters were advised to use alternate routes or opt for Delhi Metro services.
Officials believe the new highways will not only relieve pressure on Delhi’s existing ring roads but also strengthen connectivity between Delhi and its adjoining states, marking a milestone in NCR’s transport infrastructure.
