Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi deliver a forceful message on the need for a global, coordinated campaign against terrorism. Standing alongside Putin after their bilateral meeting, Modi drew a direct connection between two major terror incidents — the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this year and the Crocus City Hall massacre in Russia — stating that such acts, regardless of where they occur, stem from the same extremist mindset and threaten global peace.

Modi emphasised that India and Russia have consistently partnered in combating terrorism and will continue to reinforce this shared stance. His remarks highlighted the severe impact of the April 2025 Pahalgam assault, in which tourists, including foreigners, were targeted, prompting India to undertake retaliatory measures against terror networks across the border in Pakistan. By referencing this attack alongside the 2024 Moscow incident, where hundreds were killed or injured in one of Russia’s deadliest extremist strikes, the Prime Minister underlined the universal nature of the threat and the necessity of international solidarity.

Putin, during the joint appearance, reiterated Russia’s support for India’s counter-terrorism efforts and expressed sympathy over the Pahalgam killings. Both leaders signalled strong alignment on tackling extremist groups, strengthening intelligence cooperation, and preventing cross-border terror financing.

Beyond security concerns, the meeting showcased renewed momentum in India–Russia diplomatic and economic relations. Officials from both sides are preparing for the upcoming annual summit, where discussions are expected to focus on defence collaboration, energy partnerships and expanding bilateral trade. Modi stressed that the long-standing friendship between the two nations has remained steady despite shifting global geopolitical dynamics, and that cooperation will continue across strategic sectors.

Putin’s trip — his first to India in four years — also covered issues such as energy security, long-term supplies of essential commodities and technological cooperation. The visit comes at a time when both countries seek to balance their international engagements while preserving traditional alliances.

The strong anti-terror message delivered jointly by the two leaders served as the central theme of the visit. By pairing the tragedies in Pahalgam and Moscow, Modi sought to reinforce the view that terrorism is not confined by borders and requires a collective, uncompromising response. The discussions signalled that India and Russia will deepen their coordination on both regional and global security challenges, reaffirming their commitment to tackling extremist violence through collaborative action.
