Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Mumbai on July 13 to inaugurate a series of substantial infrastructure projects totaling over Rs 29,000 crore. Among these initiatives are new platforms at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Station.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced that Modi will arrive at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai, at around 5:30 pm. There, he will launch, dedicate to the nation, and lay the foundation stone for numerous projects related to the road, railways, and ports sectors, valued at more than Rs 29,400 crore. Included in these are the Thane-Borivali and Goregaon Mulund Link Road projects, both featuring twin tunnels and spearheaded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The nearly 12-km Thane-Borivali tunnel, with an estimated cost of Rs 16,600 crore, aims to cut travel time between Thane and Borivali by one hour. This twin-tube tunnel will traverse below the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, directly connecting the Western Express Highway at Borivali with Thane Ghodbander Road, thereby reducing the journey by 12 km. Additionally, Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, valued at over Rs 6,300 crore. Spanning approximately 6.65 km, the GMLR will link the Western Express Highway at Goregaon with the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund, offering direct connectivity to the new Navi Mumbai airport and the Pune Mumbai Expressway.

Further, the Prime Minister will initiate the Kalyan Yard Remodelling and the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal at Turbhe in Navi Mumbai. The Kalyan Yard remodelling project will separate long-distance and suburban traffic, enhancing the yard’s capacity and reducing congestion. The Gati Shakti terminal, occupying over 32,600 square meters, will not only handle cement and other commodities but also provide employment opportunities for locals, serving as an additional terminal for cargo.

Modi will also inaugurate new platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and extend platforms 10 and 11 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Station. The longer platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus will accommodate longer trains, increasing passenger capacity and improving traffic management. The extension of platforms 10 and 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Station by 382 meters, complete with a cover shed and washable apron, will enable the station to handle trains with up to 24 coaches, significantly boosting passenger volume.

In addition to infrastructure projects, the Prime Minister will launch the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, an internship program with a budget of around Rs 5,600 crore. This transformative initiative is designed to tackle youth unemployment by providing skill enhancement and industry exposure for young people aged 18 to 30 years.

Concluding his visit, Modi will inaugurate the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) Towers at the Bandra Kurla Complex at 7 pm. This new building will meet the evolving needs of INS members, offering a modern and efficient office space that will serve as the hub for the newspaper industry in Mumbai.

Modi’s visit marks a significant step towards enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure and addressing key issues such as traffic congestion, connectivity, and youth unemployment. These projects underscore the government’s commitment to advancing the city’s development and improving the quality of life for its residents.
