PM Ujjwala Yojana Continues: Subsidy of Rs 300 on LPG Cylinders Extended

With the recent return of the Narendra Modi government, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) can breathe easy as the subsidy on LPG cylinders has been extended for the next nine months. This means that eligible beneficiaries will continue to receive a subsidy of Rs 300 on the purchase of a 14.2 kg cylinder until March 31, 2025.
Launched in 2016, PMUY aims to provide clean cooking fuel to households that were previously dependent on traditional fuels such as firewood or coal. Under this scheme, beneficiaries receive up to 12 refills per year during the financial year 2024-25, each with a subsidy of Rs 300.
In major cities like Delhi, where the general public pays Rs 803 for an LPG cylinder, Ujjwala beneficiaries enjoy a significant discount, purchasing the same cylinder for Rs 503 after applying the subsidy. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable access to cooking gas for economically vulnerable households across India.
As of March 1, 2024, the PMUY has benefited over 10.27 crore households, with the government allocating a budget of Rs 12,000 crore for the financial year 2024-25 to sustain these subsidies. The subsidy amount is directly transferred to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries, facilitating a seamless transaction process.
Recognizing the scheme’s importance, especially amidst fluctuating international LPG prices, the government remains steadfast in supporting PMUY beneficiaries to shield them from price volatility. This strategic measure not only promotes the use of cleaner cooking fuel but also contributes to the overall well-being and health of millions of households nationwide.
Looking ahead, the government plans to expand the PMUY by providing 75 lakh new connections, thereby extending the benefits of the scheme to more deserving households.
