In a historic shift, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is set to relocate from the iconic South Block to a brand-new complex under the Central Vista redevelopment project this Diwali, marking its first move since India’s independence in 1947.
The new PMO building, named Sewa Tirath-1, will be part of the Executive Enclave-I located near Vayu Bhavan. Alongside it, Sewa Tirath-2 will house the Cabinet Secretariat, and Sewa Tirath-3 will accommodate the National Security Adviser’s office. The relocation is expected to take place shortly after Diwali, though some administrative work has already commenced from the new facility.
According to officials, the move is part of a larger modernization plan to streamline government operations and reduce reliance on colonial-era structures. The current South Block and North Block — which have served as the administrative nerve centres for over seven decades — will be transformed into part of the upcoming Yuga Yugin Bharat Sangrahalaya, a new national museum. The transformation will be undertaken in collaboration with France’s Museum Development Agency.
The Central Vista project also includes construction of several Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings to house various ministries under one unified administrative complex. This reorganization aims to improve coordination, ensure energy efficiency, and enhance working conditions with better space utilization, lighting, and ventilation.
The government envisions completing the broader redevelopment of the Central Vista, including the Executive Enclave, by 2027. Once operational, the new complex is expected to become the central hub for key government offices, symbolizing a modernized vision of India’s governance.
