Authorities report that 11 individuals, including the alleged shooter, were fatally shot at an education facility in central Sweden. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson labeled the assault at Risbergska school in Orebro, located 200km (124 miles) west of Stockholm, as the “most devastating mass shooting in Sweden’s history”. Authorities stated that the individual is one of the deceased and is thought to have operated independently. They mentioned that the motive remained uncertain but excluded any form of “ideological” reasoning.

“It is difficult to take in the magnitude of what has happened today,” Kristersson said at an evening news conference.

Authorities had previously cautioned that the number of fatalities might keep increasing since multiple individuals had sustained injuries.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, authorities indicated that the count of injured individuals is still uncertain. Police received notifications of a shooting occurring at Risbergska school – an adult education facility – at 12:33 local time (11:44 GMT). The center is located on a campus that houses additional schools.

These centers are frequented mainly by individuals who have not completed primary or secondary education. Earlier, students at several nearby schools were being kept indoors “for security purposes”. “We don’t want members of the public to go there,” Orebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest warned.

Local media stated that nearby hospitals had cleaned out their emergency departments and intensive care units to make way for patients. Orebro University Hospital said that five patients were treated in the emergency room for gunshot wounds. According to the report, a sixth individual was treated for “minor injuries” that were not caused by a gun.

There were no children among those being treated there, according to an update from Orebro County Municipality.
