Greater Noida West—In a powerful and poignant response to the horrific incident at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where a young female junior doctor was brutally gang-raped and murdered, women from across India have voiced their outrage. Even in the far-flung city of Greater Noida West, this tragedy has sparked a protest that echoes the sentiments of women everywhere. Last night, at around 11:30 PM, nearly 50 women of varying ages gathered in Gaur City 1 to participate in a protest march. Their voices resonated with anger and despair, demanding justice for the victim and the immediate arrest and severe punishment of the perpetrators.
Sudhriti Dutta, one of the participants in the march, expressed her deep concern. As the mother of a medical student herself, she shared her fears for her daughter’s safety in the aftermath of this horrifying incident. Dutta’s words were heavy with worry, reflecting the anxiety that every parent feels when such a brutal crime occurs. She emphasized that, despite years of independence, women in India still struggle to feel truly free, as their safety remains an ongoing concern.
She emphasized that the reason for their protest, even from this distant land, was to highlight a disturbing reality: that even after so many years of independence, Indian women are still not truly free. The tragic event at R.G. Kar has brought to the forefront the persistent fear and concern that women experience daily for their own safety and that of their loved ones.
Panchali Shyam Dev, another citizen who participated in the march, voiced a critical perspective and argued that as long as the mindset of men in society does not change, as long as political leaders continue to shield criminals, and as long as women’s safety remains merely a phrase rather than a tangible reality in daily life, no woman in India can truly be safe. These words underscored the deep-rooted issues in society that perpetuate such violence against women.
The protest in Greater Noida West, though miles away from the site of the tragedy, was a powerful statement. It was a reflection of the collective anger, fear, and determination of women across the country to demand justice and ensure that such heinous crimes do not go unpunished. The women who gathered last night in Gaur City 1 made it clear that they would not remain silent in the face of such brutality. Their voices, along with those of many others across India, are a reminder that the fight for women’s safety and freedom is far from over.
In a country that celebrates its independence, the question remains—are its women truly free? The protest in Greater Noida West serves as a stark reminder that until every woman in India can live without fear for her safety, the nation has a long way to go in achieving true independence for all its citizens.
