The Supreme Court has received a public interest lawsuit accusing high constitutional functionaries of inciting hatred and making careless statements. The lawsuit cites anti-Muslim remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior ministers and governors as instances of high-ranking officials violating their constitutional duties.
The petition claims that such remarks undercut constitutional ideals and the responsibilities associated with high public offices, and it highlights what it says as frequent statements directed at the Muslim population.Twelve social activists, including former Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, John Dayal, and Roop Rekha Verma, have entered a plea asking the court to get involved in the case.
When bringing the PIL against high-ranking authorities, the petitioners provided examples of what they called “several concerning statements by public officials.” Among the examples are the “kathmulla” statements made in the Assembly by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The request also cites comments made by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who allegedly urged the youth to “avenge history,” and Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane, who allegedly called Muslims “Pakistani pimps.”
