Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un commenced talks in Pyongyang on Wednesday, aiming to strengthen their strategic alliance amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions with Western nations.

Putin, on his first official state visit to Pyongyang in 24 years, expressed gratitude to Kim for his unwavering support during Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. This meeting marks another step in discussions focusing on economic ties and trade relations between the two countries, both of which face sanctions from Western powers.

Previous face-to-face talks between Putin and Kim took place in eastern Russia last September, followed by subsequent rounds of negotiations in Moscow and Pyongyang. Putin highlighted the progress made in bilateral relations since Kim’s visit to Russia last year, emphasizing the development of a new foundational agreement aimed at bolstering long-term interstate cooperation.

North Korean state media conveyed Kim’s hopes that the current meetings would deepen economic and trade partnerships with Russia. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department has expressed concerns over reports suggesting North Korea’s military aid to Russia, including shipments of ballistic missiles and munitions, amid the Ukraine conflict. U.S. officials anticipate Putin may seek additional military assistance during his Pyongyang visit.

Putin hailed a previously signed agreement as a pivotal document laying the groundwork for enduring relations between Russia and North Korea, affirming its significance in their diplomatic discourse.

Upon his arrival, Putin was welcomed with a ceremony by North Korean officials, followed by his accommodation at a state guest house. Kim personally greeted Putin at Pyongyang International Airport, and the two leaders traveled together in Putin’s private vehicle, passing through illuminated streets to the guest house. North Korean media reported that during their journey, Putin and Kim engaged in deep discussions, exchanging their thoughts candidly.

The morning following his arrival, Putin and Kim took a stroll through Kim Il Sung Square amidst enthusiastic displays by North Korean citizens, who greeted them with flowers, balloons, and national flags.

The meeting between Putin and Kim in Pyongyang underscores the ongoing alignment between Russia and North Korea against Western pressures, highlighting their shared interests in geopolitical stability and economic cooperation.
