Qatar Joins India, United Arab Emirates and Others in Emergency Visa Relief for Stranded Travellers
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/30th March 2026

Amid ongoing travel disruptions linked to regional tensions and airspace restrictions, several countries including Qatar, India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Bahrain and Oman have introduced emergency visa measures to assist thousands of stranded travellers.
The move comes in response to widespread flight cancellations and restricted air routes across West Asia, which have left passengers unable to return to their home countries. In a coordinated humanitarian effort, governments have stepped in to ease immigration rules, offering temporary relief to tourists, business travellers, and migrant workers affected by the crisis.
Qatar has taken a leading role by implementing flexible visa policies across all categories. Authorities have granted automatic visa extensions and waived overstay penalties, allowing travellers to remain in the country legally without incurring fines. Importantly, individuals whose visas have expired due to travel disruptions are being permitted to exit without facing legal consequences. These measures are expected to remain in effect until normal travel operations resume or until a specified deadline.
Other nations in the region have followed suit with similar initiatives. The United Arab Emirates has introduced automatic extensions and fine waivers, while Saudi Arabia has relaxed exit regulations and provided additional time for visa holders to make travel arrangements. India has also extended support by ensuring that foreign nationals stranded within its borders are not penalised for overstaying under exceptional circumstances.
The disruption has been attributed to escalating geopolitical tensions and temporary airspace closures, which have significantly impacted international flight operations. Major transit hubs have been affected, leaving travellers in uncertain situations with limited options for onward journeys. Officials across these countries have emphasised that the measures are rooted in humanitarian considerations, aiming to reduce the financial and legal burden on affected individuals. By suspending penalties and simplifying exit procedures, authorities are ensuring that travellers are not unfairly punished for delays beyond their control.
Experts have described the response as a notable example of regional cooperation, highlighting how multiple governments have aligned their policies to address a shared challenge. The coordinated approach has helped bring clarity and reassurance to thousands navigating uncertain travel conditions. However, travellers have been advised to stay updated on official announcements and adhere to revised deadlines. Authorities have cautioned that once normalcy returns, standard visa regulations will be reinstated, making it essential for individuals to regularise their status or exit within the permitted timeframe.
