The latest lineup features the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, and Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 platforms. These chipsets will drive a range of handheld gaming devices for Android. Qualcomm states that the chipsets will provide enhanced performance, upgraded graphics, and superior connectivity.
The Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 heads the series as the most potent choice, although it lacks Qualcomm’s newest Oryon CPU or the Adreno 830 GPU found in its top smartphone processors. Nonetheless, it still offers significant enhancements compared to its predecessor. Qualcomm asserts a 30 percent enhancement in CPU performance and a 28 percent increase in graphics capability relative to the earlier G3 chip.
This chipset additionally supports Lumen, the lighting and reflections system of Unreal Engine 5, becoming the first Snapdragon G Series processor to offer such support. The G3 Gen 3 enables QHD+ resolution at 144Hz and features Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 through the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 platform.
The Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, created for gaming and cloud gaming, takes the place of the G2 Gen 1 and offers significant enhancements. Qualcomm reports that the new chip offers as much as 2.3 times improved CPU performance and up to 3.8 times quicker GPU performance with the transition to the Adreno A22 GPU. The G2 Gen 2 enhances display capability to QHD+ at 144Hz and provides Wi-Fi 7 for reduced latency and improved online gaming experience.
The Snapdragon G1 Gen 2, on the other hand, is designed for budget-friendly handheld devices aimed at cloud gaming. It provides a significant enhancement compared to the G1 Gen 1, with Qualcomm reporting an 80 percent boost in CPU performance and a 25 percent rise in GPU capability. The G1 Gen 2 now additionally supports FHD+ resolution at 120Hz, doubling the refresh rate compared to the last generation.
Qualcomm also announced that numerous forthcoming handheld gaming devices will utilize the new G Series chips. The Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 will be included in Ayaneo’s Pocket S2 and Gaming Pad, along with OneXPlayer’s OneXSugar. The Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 is set to launch in Retroid’s upcoming handheld, expected to be the Retroid Pocket 6. The upcoming Retroid Pocket Classic, a Game Boy-like gadget, will be driven by the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 and boasts a 3.92-inch AMOLED screen.
