After the High Court granted actor Rajpal Yadav temporary release from Tihar Jail in a check bounce case, he released a statement. He expressed gratitude to Bollywood, the public, and the High Court for their support.
“I will complete 30 years in Bollywood in Mumbai in 2027. People from all over the country, children, old and young, are with me… The way the entire country and the world, my Bollywood, has loved me, if there are any allegations against me, I am available to answer. Thank you, High Court,” Rajpal said.
Rajpal was given the reprieve on Monday, enabling him to stay out of jail until March 18, 2026, following the court’s order that he deposit Rs 1.5 crore. The judgment was made soon after Rajpal spent more than a week in Tihar Jail after turning himself in to the police for the outstanding debt. The issue concerns a debt he took out more than ten years ago, which he was unable to pay back, resulting in a string of legal actions against him.
In order to finance his directing debut, Ata Pata Laapata, Rajpal obtained Rs 5 crore from Delhi-based Murali Projects Pvt Ltd in 2010.
Despite its 2012 release, the movie did not do well at the box office. Due to Yadav’s inability to pay back the debt, there was a protracted legal battle.
After seven of Yadav’s checks bounced in 2018, a Magisterial Court found him and his spouse guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. He received a sentence of simple jail for six months. After the conviction was subsequently maintained by a Sessions Court, Rajpal filed an appeal with the Delhi High Court. The remaining sum had grown to Rs 9 crore by 2024.
