Ram Nath Kovind Calls for Embedding Environmental Consciousness in Policy and Daily Life on World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day, former President Ram Nath Kovind issued a strong message urging citizens and policymakers alike to adopt environmental consciousness as a guiding principle. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kovind wrote, “On #WorldEnvironmentDay, let us resolve to make environmental consciousness a norm — in policies, choices…” The message emphasized the urgency of mainstreaming sustainable thinking across governance, personal behavior, and institutional frameworks.

Kovind, known for his focus on inclusive development and constitutional values during his tenure as the 14th President of India (2017–2022), used this global observance to draw attention to India’s responsibility in confronting ecological challenges. While no longer holding public office, Kovind continues to contribute to national discourse, especially on matters of sustainability, education, and governance.

His statement arrives at a time when India is grappling with severe climate-related challenges—rising heatwaves, erratic monsoons, and declining air quality in major cities. Environmental experts have increasingly called for stronger policy integration, from rural land use planning to urban infrastructure. Kovind’s appeal aligns with these priorities, urging a cultural and institutional shift where environmental values are embedded rather than imposed.

As World Environment Day 2025 focuses globally on restoring degraded ecosystems, Kovind’s message serves as a reminder that individual and collective action must go hand-in-hand. By framing environmental consciousness as a societal norm, not a niche concern, Kovind underlines the importance of long-term thinking and sustainable living.

His continued advocacy adds moral weight to India’s environmental agenda and reaffirms the role of former national leaders in shaping public awareness on global issues.
