Bollywood star Ranveer Singh has issued a public apology following a major backlash over his comments regarding the Kannada film Kantara during the closing ceremony of IFFI 2025 in Goa. The controversy erupted after Singh, while attempting to praise lead actor Rishabh Shetty’s riveting performance in the film’s climax, mistakenly referred to the deity depicted in the sacred possession sequence as a “female ghost.”

He compounded the offense by briefly imitating the act on stage. This public gaffe immediately sparked a wave of online criticism and culminated in a formal police complaint from religious organizations.

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) took swift action, filing a complaint with Panaji Police, alleging that the actor had insulted Goddess Chamundadevi. The HJS representatives argued that the public depiction and description of Chamundi Daiva—a figure considered a sacred family deity by the Kotitulu community—in such a “derogatory manner” was highly disrespectful.

They warned that such acts risked causing public resentment and potentially disturbing communal harmony. The organization sought the registration of an offense under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for hurting religious sentiments and demanded a firm public assurance that the actor would abstain from similar actions in the future.

Taking to his social media handle on Tuesday, Singh offered a comprehensive and sincere apology. He clarified that his entire intent was purely one of professional admiration. “My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene… for which he has my utmost admiration,” he stated. Emphasizing his respect for the nation’s diverse heritage, he added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.” The apology arrives just days before the theatrical release of his upcoming action film, Dhurandhar.
