Ranveer Singh to Revise Apology in ‘Kantara’ Row, Plans Temple Visit After Court Hearing

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has agreed to submit a revised apology affidavit before the Karnataka High Court in connection with the controversy surrounding his remarks linked to the film Kantara. The development comes after objections were raised regarding the sincerity of his earlier apology. During a recent hearing, Singh’s legal counsel informed the court that the actor is willing to rework the language of his apology in consultation with the complainant. The move aims to address concerns that the initial affidavit did not adequately reflect genuine remorse. The matter is being heard by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, with the court taking note of the actor’s willingness to make amends.

The controversy stems from an incident at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa last year, where Singh mimicked a character portrayed by actor Rishab Shetty in Kantara. During the act, Singh reportedly made remarks that were perceived as disrespectful towards a revered deity associated with the film’s narrative, triggering backlash from sections of the public and religious groups. Following the incident, a complaint was filed, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the actor under provisions related to hurting religious sentiments and promoting disharmony. Singh subsequently approached the High Court seeking to quash the FIR, maintaining that his comments were taken out of context and were intended as a tribute to the film and its performance.

In his earlier affidavit, Singh expressed regret and clarified that he had not intended to offend anyone. He stated that he was unaware of the cultural and religious sensitivities involved at the time of the incident. However, the complainant argued that the apology lacked sincerity and failed to directly address the hurt caused, prompting the demand for a revised submission.

As part of his efforts to resolve the issue, Singh has also undertaken to visit the Chamundi temple in Karnataka to offer prayers and express his respect. This gesture, conveyed to the court, is seen as an attempt to acknowledge the sentiments of devotees and demonstrate accountability. The High Court has recorded the submissions made by Singh’s counsel and adjourned the matter to a later date, allowing time for the revised affidavit to be filed. Legal observers note that the case highlights the growing scrutiny on public figures regarding cultural sensitivity and the importance of responsible expression in public forums.
