Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has dismissed speculation linking head coach Gautam Gambhir to the Test retirements of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, asserting that such decisions are deeply personal and part of the natural progression of the game.
Amid ongoing discussions about a transition phase in Indian cricket, Ashwin came out in strong support of Gambhir’s leadership approach, highlighting his emphasis on prioritising the team over individuals. He described Gambhir as a coach who focuses on collective success rather than individual stardom, adding that this philosophy is essential during periods of rebuilding.
The remarks follow growing speculation that Gambhir’s arrival as head coach may have influenced the timing of the retirements of some of India’s biggest Test players. However, Ashwin rejected this narrative, stating that decisions to step away from the longest format are usually taken by players themselves after careful self-evaluation.
Drawing from his own experience, Ashwin revealed that his retirement was also a personal call, made after assessing his role and future within the team. He suggested that such moments are inevitable in a cricketer’s career and are rarely dictated by external pressures alone.
Ashwin also underlined that Indian cricket is larger than any individual, no matter how accomplished. He stressed the importance of building a strong team culture and preparing the next generation of players, especially as the side moves into a new phase following the exit of experienced names.
The retirements of Kohli and Sharma have marked a significant turning point for India’s Test setup. However, Ashwin’s comments indicate that the shift is part of a broader evolution rather than the result of any single influence. As the team looks ahead, the focus remains on continuity, stability, and adapting to the changing dynamics under Gambhir’s leadership.
