On Friday, the Reserve Bank of India declared that it will shortly release ₹10 and ₹500 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. These notes will feature the signature of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra.

The central bank additionally stated that the design of these notes is identical in every way to the ₹10 and ₹500 banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. Significantly, the RBI also clarified the situation regarding the ₹10 and ₹500 notes that were released earlier.

It stated that all ₹500 banknotes from the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series and ₹10 notes released previously will remain legal tender. Importantly, last month, the RBI disclosed the issuance of ₹100 and ₹200 banknotes featuring Governor Malhotra’s signature.

Succeeding Shaktikanta Das, 57-year-old Malhotra assumed the role of RBI governor in December 2024. Das hatte sein Amt nach dem Ende seiner verlängerten Amtszeit niedergelegt.
