India witnessed sweltering heatwave conditions on Sunday, with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius in several states. Despite the scorching weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted some relief from the intense heat in certain eastern states and parts of southern India later this week.

According to IMD reports, severe heatwave conditions persisted in Gangetic West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Jharkhand, with temperatures exceeding normal levels by four to seven degrees Celsius. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for most districts of Karnataka, where temperatures ranged between 42 to 44 degrees Celsius in recent days.

Similarly, Telangana experienced scorching temperatures, prompting an orange alert for 13 districts until Monday. Hyderabad recorded a maximum temperature of nearly 44 degrees Celsius, contributing to the oppressive heatwave. In Odisha, almost all districts reported temperatures nearing 44 degrees Celsius on Sunday, intensifying the discomfort caused by the relentless heat.

Meanwhile, the national capital, Delhi, grappled with temperatures reaching 41.1 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal and the highest recorded so far. However, in a welcome respite, rain showers drenched several parts of the northeastern state of Assam, offering relief from the oppressive heat. IMD has predicted thunderstorms and strong winds in Assam between May 6 and May 7.

The onset of heavy rainfall prompted authorities in Manipur to close all educational institutions on Monday and Tuesday. The state witnessed heavy rain accompanied by hailstorms on Sunday, causing damage to property and vehicles. IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds across most states in northeast India.

Additionally, IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall in Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand between May 6 and May 9, offering a reprieve from the scorching temperatures. Telangana is also expected to experience rainfall and thunderstorms between May 6 and May 8, providing relief from the oppressive heatwave conditions.

The IMD’s weather forecasts serve as a crucial guide for residents and authorities to prepare for extreme weather conditions and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact. As India grapples with the onset of summer heatwaves, the prospect of rainfall brings hope for relief from the oppressive temperatures and offers respite to affected regions.
