NEW DELHI, 7 Apr – The Assam units of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have lodged formal police complaints against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over alleged objectionable remarks made during a recent election rally in southern Assam.
The RSS’s North Assam and South Assam units filed complaints at Dispur Police Station in Guwahati and Silchar Police Station respectively, seeking legal action over what they described as “provocative and communally sensitive” statements.
According to the complaints, Kharge made the remarks at an election rally held in Nilambazar in the Karimganj South Assembly constituency of Sribhumi district. He allegedly compared the ideology of the RSS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a “poisonous snake” and called for its elimination.
The complaint quotes Kharge as saying that just as a person would stop offering namaz to deal with a poisonous snake, people should act similarly against the RSS and BJP. The RSS has expressed serious concern, stating that such remarks could incite hostility, fear and even violence against its members and supporters.
The organisation has argued that the statement amounts to corrupt electoral practice under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and could contribute to spreading enmity among different communities and political groups. It further alleged that branding an organisation’s ideology as “poisonous” and calling for its removal could be interpreted as incitement to harm its members.
The complaints also warn that such statements may deepen communal divisions between Hindus and Muslims, potentially disturbing public order and the electoral environment in Assam.
RSS representatives emphasised that democratic discourse must remain within constitutional and legal limits and should not endanger social harmony.
The complaints were filed by Khagen Saikia, Prant Karyavah (North Assam), and Jyotsnamay Chakraborty, Prant Sanghchalak (South Assam).
