Russia Unleashes Large-Scale Missile and Drone Attack Across Ukraine, Casualties Reported

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/2nd June 2026

Russia launched a massive wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, targeting multiple cities and causing significant damage to residential areas and infrastructure. The overnight assault, described by Ukrainian officials as one of the largest attacks in recent months, resulted in civilian casualties, widespread destruction and fears that several people remained trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

Air raid sirens sounded across much of Ukraine as Russian forces launched a coordinated barrage involving hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. Ukrainian air defence units intercepted many of the incoming threats, but several projectiles managed to reach their targets, striking residential neighbourhoods and critical facilities in different parts of the country.

The capital, Kyiv, was among the areas hardest hit. A missile strike severely damaged a residential building, causing a partial collapse and prompting a major rescue operation. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to search through debris for survivors amid concerns that residents were still trapped under the rubble. Fires were reported in several districts as authorities worked to contain the damage and assist affected families.

Other cities, including Dnipro, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, also came under attack. Local officials reported deaths and injuries, along with extensive damage to homes, public buildings and infrastructure. Rescue teams were deployed to multiple locations as emergency services responded to the aftermath of the strikes.

Ukrainian authorities condemned the attacks, accusing Moscow of targeting civilian areas and intensifying pressure on the country through sustained aerial bombardments. Officials said the latest assault demonstrated the continuing threat posed by long-range missile and drone attacks despite ongoing efforts to strengthen air defence capabilities.

The strikes occurred against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the conflict, with both sides continuing military operations across several fronts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed appeals to international partners for additional military support, particularly advanced air-defence systems capable of intercepting missiles and drones before they reach populated areas.

The latest barrage highlights the persistent intensity of the war, which has entered another phase of heavy aerial attacks. As rescue operations continue and damage assessments are carried out, concerns are growing over the humanitarian consequences of the conflict and the possibility of further escalation. Authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant, with fears that additional strikes could follow in the coming days.
