According to Ukrainian officials early on Sunday, a Russian drone strike on Kyiv resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and injured multiple others, igniting fires in tall apartment complexes and across the capital.
“A massive enemy drone attack on Kyiv,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko posted on the Telegram messaging app.
The state emergency service shared pictures depicting firefighters battling flames at night, even high within an apartment building. A woman lost her life when drone wreckage ignited a fire in a tall residential structure in the Dniprovskyi district, according to the emergency service’s report on Telegram, while at least 27 individuals were evacuated from the site.
The service reported that another individual has died in the Holosiivskyi district. The United States is advocating for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, aiming to establish a partial ceasefire that would stop attacks on energy facilities. However, both parties have been announcing ongoing attacks.
According to Klitschko, at least seven individuals sustained injuries in Kyiv, and emergency services were sent to multiple city districts where fires had been reported. Two people were hurt and multiple homes were damaged in the area around the capital, regional Governor Mykola Kalashnik reported on Telegram.
Russia did not provide an immediate response. Both parties reject accusations of aiming at civilians in the three-year conflict initiated by Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to maps from Ukraine’s Air Force, Kyiv, its surrounding area, and eastern Ukraine were under air raid alerts for over five hours, beginning late on Saturday.
