Russian House Kolkata Celebrates Women’s Day With Inspiring Art Exhibition

An empowering painting exhibition titled “Role of Women in the Contemporary World” was inaugurated at Gorky Sadan, Russian House Kolkata on 5 March. The event marked International Women’s Day, showcasing diverse styles and perspectives on women’s roles today through artwork by 70 talented women artists. The exhibition highlights the creativity, talent, and inspiring voices of women artists.

All the 70 artists were present at the inauguration of the exhibition. Greeting them for the occasion, the Director of the Russian House, Sergey Shushin emphasized the significance of 8th March which celebrates the strength, resilience, and achievements of women. He said, “We are delighted to observe International Women’s Day with such a wide array of paintings. Wishing you success, happiness, and endless opportunities on International Women’s Day.”

The Consul General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata, Maxim Kozlov and his spouse Natalia Gerasimova were the chief guests of the event. “Women and creativity go hand in hand. A high capacity for creativity and innovation is deeply rooted in women. This art exhibition which celebrates womanhood through art, upholds women’s achievements, highlights their creativity and expresses their unique perspectives – a perfect way to observe Women’s Day. I am happy to note that the number of exhibits has increased from 60 last year to 70 paintings this year”, remarked the Consul General in a fitting and opportune tribute. Speaking in fluent Bengali, Consul Kozlov surprised and delighted the guests. The Consul General along with his spouse and the Director of the Russian House went around the exhibition, interacting with each and every artist. The artists spoke about their work, style and what inspired them.

Madhabi Bhattacharya, Director Institute of Russian Language, shared, “Observing Women’s Day is important for our students who are learning the Russian language. They get to know the significance of this day and how it is celebrated in Russia. This celebration has a beautiful legacy in Russia, where it is observed on a grand scale. With this event in Kolkata, we connect with Russia.”

The Chayanot Women Choir of Kolkata, performed songs, and recitation lauding women power. Gautam Ghosh, Programme Officer Gorky Sadan, conducted the event. The students of the Institute of Russian Language were also present. Over 100 guests attended the event.
The exhibition with different genre of paintings, is a testament to women’s creativity and talent. The interaction with the artists made for a visual, intellectual and richly artistic celebratory atmosphere.
The exhibition is open to visitors until 12 March, 10 AM to 7 PM on weekdays.
