Currently, in a position to become the first female Chief Justice of India, Justice B V Nagarathna wrote the lone dissent in the Supreme Court’s 4:1 ruling on demonetization.
Nagarathna, the youngest of the five judges on the Constitution Bench, ruled that the Reserve Bank of India failed to demonstrate any independent application of mind in the subject when it came to the government’s decision to implement demonetization in November 2016.
Justices Abdul Nazeer, B. R. Gavai, A. S. Bopanna, and V. Ramasubramanium were the other members of the bench who made the decision about demonetization.
Justice Nagarathna began her legal career in Bengaluru and was appointed an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2008. She is the daughter of Justice E S Venkataramiah, who served as Chief Justice of India for around six months in 1989. She was promoted to a permanent judge of the court in 2010.
According to the seniority ranking, Justice Nagarathna is expected to hold the position of Chief Justice of India for more than a month in 2027.
