More than three years after being detained by the Enforcement Directorate on July 23, 2022, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, a major suspect in the SSC recruitment scam, was given bail on Tuesday.
After posting his bail bond, Chatterjee, who had spent the previous 203 days in a private hospital in Mukundapur, southeast Kolkata, was freed from judicial custody, according to PTI. His release came after witnesses in related cases under investigation by the CBI were finished being questioned by a trial court on Monday.
He had already been given bail in the ED cases, and the Supreme Court had later granted him bail in the related CBI cases, subject to the requirement that he remain detained until the agency had finished questioning witnesses.
When the former secretary general of the Trinamool Congress boarded his car and drove to his home in Naktala, south Kolkata, Chatterjee’s supporters had gathered in large numbers in front of the hospital, yelling “Partha da zindabad” slogans amid an extremely charged scene.
