News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee/ 5th March 2026

A second naval vessel from Iran is reportedly heading toward the waters near Sri Lanka, raising fresh concerns in the region just a day after a major naval confrontation involving the United States resulted in the sinking of an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean.

The development follows the destruction of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, which was reportedly torpedoed by a US submarine in waters south of Sri Lanka. The attack caused heavy casualties among the crew and triggered rescue operations by Sri Lankan authorities. The incident has intensified tensions in the wider region amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran and US-led forces. According to reports, the second Iranian warship is carrying more than a hundred crew members and has been moving toward Sri Lanka’s maritime zone. Officials in Colombo confirmed that the vessel was approaching the island nation’s waters and said the situation was being monitored closely by the country’s defence and maritime authorities.

Sri Lankan naval forces had earlier launched rescue operations after receiving distress signals following the sinking of IRIS Dena. Several survivors were pulled from the sea, while rescue teams also recovered multiple bodies from the water. The injured sailors were transported to hospitals in the southern coastal city of Galle for medical treatment.

The Iranian frigate reportedly had around 180 crew members on board when it was struck by a torpedo fired by a US submarine. The attack occurred in international waters and marked a rare instance of a submarine sinking a modern surface warship. The incident has further escalated tensions between Tehran and Washington at a time when the Middle East is already facing growing military confrontation.

The approach of another Iranian naval vessel near Sri Lanka has sparked concerns that the crisis could expand beyond the Middle East into the wider Indian Ocean region. Security analysts believe the ship could either be attempting to provide assistance following the earlier incident or seeking temporary refuge near Sri Lankan waters.

Sri Lanka now faces a delicate diplomatic situation as it attempts to maintain neutrality while dealing with the humanitarian and security implications of the unfolding events. Authorities have indicated that their priority remains ensuring maritime safety and providing assistance to those affected by the earlier attack.

Officials are also evaluating how to respond if the approaching Iranian vessel seeks permission to dock or requests emergency assistance. Any decision will require careful diplomatic consideration, as Sri Lanka aims to avoid becoming directly involved in the escalating confrontation. The incident has drawn international attention because it occurred close to key shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean, which are vital for global trade and energy transportation. Experts warn that continued military activity in the region could pose risks to maritime security and disrupt commercial shipping routes.
