Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has joined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as assistant coach ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The franchise announced the appointment on November 13, marking another major change in its backroom staff as KKR looks to rebuild after a disappointing 2025 campaign.
Watson will work under new head coach Abhishek Nayar and alongside mentor Dwayne Bravo in a refreshed coaching lineup. KKR CEO Venky Mysore said Watson’s inclusion brings “immense experience and strategic depth” to the team, adding that his deep understanding of T20 cricket would “enhance both player development and team culture.”
The former Australian cricketer enjoyed a stellar international and IPL career, representing Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. In the IPL, he played 145 matches between 2008 and 2020, scoring over 3,800 runs, taking 92 wickets, and winning two titles — with Rajasthan Royals in 2008 and Chennai Super Kings in 2018.
Expressing his excitement, Watson said, “It’s an honour to join a franchise as iconic as KKR. I’ve always admired their passion and commitment, and I look forward to helping the team bring another title to Kolkata.”
The appointment is seen as part of KKR’s strategic revamp to strengthen its technical staff and regain its winning edge. With Watson’s vast T20 experience, the Knight Riders are hoping to mount a strong comeback in IPL 2026.
