Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force has safely returned to Earth after completing a landmark 14-day space mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), becoming the first Indian in nearly four decades to journey into space. Launched on June 25 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) private mission operated by Axiom Space in collaboration with SpaceX and international partners.
Shukla flew aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft alongside an international crew led by NASA veteran Peggy Whitson, with fellow astronauts from Hungary and Poland. The team reached the ISS on June 26 following a 28-hour flight and conducted over 30 scientific experiments in microgravity. Shukla led seven of these experiments, focusing on human biology, material science, and space-based research with potential real-world applications.
The mission marks India’s return to crewed spaceflight after Rakesh Sharma’s historic 1984 mission. Shukla’s participation has drawn praise across the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailing him as a symbol of national pride and progress. The mission is also seen as a precursor to India’s indigenous Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, slated for launch by 2027.
This flight, India’s first on a commercial space mission, highlights the growing global collaboration in space exploration. As Shukla returns, he carries with him not only scientific data but also the renewed aspirations of a nation looking to make its mark in the next era of space innovation.
