An investigation into the shooting between Assam Forest authorities and unidentified thugs at Mukhrow under Jirikinding police station in West Karbi Anglong district has been ordered, according to a statement from the Assam government.
The inquiry panel has been given three months to produce its report.
However, Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, said that six people were murdered, five of whom were Meghalaya citizens, due to fire by Assam police and Assam Forest guards. He mentioned the West Jaitia Hills district settlement as Mukroh.
Mr. Sangma also posted on Twitter to express how strongly the Meghalayan government disapproves of the killings.
In collaboration with the government of Meghalaya, the Assam government will take the necessary actions to launch an investigation into the situation.
The Assam Government has also pledged that GoA will cooperate with whatever demands GoM makes of GoI in order to ensure that justice is done and those who commit crimes are punished.
He also called on the people of Meghalaya to uphold peace and unity while announcing ex-gratia of 5 lakh each to the family of the deceased.
The Meghalaya government shut down mobile internet and data services in seven districts starting at 10:30 am on November 22 for a 48-hour period. According to a notification from Meghalaya’s Home Secretary C.V.D. Diengdoh, this was done to avoid misuse of social media platforms that would disturb peace and calm.
Afraid of backlash, the Assam police restricted access for vehicles heading to the East Khasi Hills district’s administrative center and Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, one of the seven districts where mobile internet service has been suspended.
The event took place as the two State administrations were working to settle their differences in the final six of the 12 contested interstate boundary sectors. On March 29, a settlement was reached that addressed the conflict in the first six sectors.
