Somnath Kundu’s triumph at the 70th National Film Awards has been marked by a poignant tribute. The Tollywood industry celebrated a notable achievement at this year’s awards, with Anik Dutta’s Aparajito securing two awards and Kaushik Ganguly’s Kaberi Antardhan winning one. Among the accolades, Kundu received the Best Makeup award for Aparajito, while Ananda Addhya was honored for Best Production Design for the same film. Kaberi Antardhan was recognized as the Best Bengali Film.
For Kundu, renowned for his expertise in prosthetic makeup, this National Award represents a significant milestone in his career. Expressing his gratitude, he remarked, “Receiving a National Award is a distinguished honor and brings with it a heightened sense of responsibility. This recognition will inspire me to continue pushing the boundaries of my craft. I am deeply thankful to my director, Anik Da, and Jeetu Kamal for their trust and support.”
Kundu’s award-winning work was part of Aparajito, a film that pays homage to Satyajit Ray’s classic Pather Panchali. The film features Jeetu Kamal in a role inspired by Ray himself. Reflecting on the challenges of the project, Kundu shared, “The task of bringing this story to life was daunting, but the positive reception of my work is incredibly fulfilling. The acknowledgment from the National Awards is a testament to the effort and passion invested in this project.”
Despite the joy of his achievement, Kundu’s celebration is tempered by recent tragic events. The recent rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has deeply affected him. “The brutal crime committed against this young doctor is a grave injustice and cannot be condoned,” Kundu stated. “At this moment, there is no room for celebration. My thoughts are with the victim and her family, and I hope for the swift and severe punishment of those responsible. I dedicate this National Award to the memory of this young doctor, in honor of her legacy.”
Kundu’s dedication highlights a deep empathy and respect for the broader societal issues that transcend personal achievements. His decision to dedicate the award to the deceased doctor serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of justice and solidarity in times of tragedy.
