In response to the detention of hundreds of South Koreans during a U.S. immigration raid on a Hyundai Motor company and the opening of a new tab car battery production, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung ordered a full-scale response on Saturday.
In response to Thursday’s detention of more than 300 Koreans at the facility in the southern state of Georgia, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said the government has assembled a team and that he might visit Washington to talk with officials if necessary.
“I am deeply concerned. I feel heavy responsibility for the arrests of our citizens,” Cho told an emergency government meeting.
The largest single-site enforcement operation in the history of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security involved the arrest of around 475 workers at the facility near Savannah as part of President Donald Trump’s intensifying crackdown on immigration.
Tensions between the Trump administration and Seoul—a significant Asian ally and U.S. investor—may worsen as a result of the incident.
The specifics of a trade agreement that involves $350 billion in South Korean investment in the US have caused them to clash. Opening a new tab, LG Energy Solution, which is constructing the factory in partnership with Hyundai, announced that it had asked staff members to return from business travels to the United States and had suspended travel there other than for customer meetings.
