Silchar, Jan 15: Well renowned scholar, Professor Late Nibaran Chandra Laskar, also a noble politician, got his due recognition on his 122nd birth anniversary when a statue of his was unveiled on Sunday afternoon, and a souvenir released, ‘Smritir Aloy’. Late Nibaran Chandra Laskar, who held double Masters Degree in Bengali and Sanskrit from Dhaka and Calcutta University, began his career as an academician contributing in the setting up of Barak Valley’s best college, Guru Charan College, now on its way to be a deemed University. Having left it for not being made a Principal in 1942, his mentor, a jailed leader, and founder Principal of Guru Charan College, Arun Kumar Chanda, brought him to join the Indian National Congress from where he never looked back. During the partition of India, Late Nibaran Chandra Laskar was inducted into the Assam government as ‘Relief and Rehabilitation’ minister. Forming, Cachar Kalyan Samiti, as it’s President, Late Nibaran Chandra Laskar along with CM of Assam, Late Gopinath Bordoloi, met Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and informed him of keeping than undivided Cachar, inside Assam. His band of protestors opposing the Sylhet referendum helped present Barak Valley from not being merged with East Pakistan. He was also a sub committee member for the constitution drafting committee, later, serving as a Member of Parliament, in 1952 and 1957, only to resign during the language movement in Silchar in 1961. Eminent, scholars and noted writers assembled today at the residence of Late Nibaran Chandra Laskar and took part in the unveiling of his statue and released a souvenir in his name. Speaking about him, all of them welcomed his contributions in present day Barak Valley coming from a village named Fulbari in Katigorah constituency of Assam. Organizing secretary of this function, Soumya Kanti Purkayastha, said, his grandfather’s contributions are immense and he is likely to revive Cachar Kalyan Samiti in the days to come for all round development of this region.
