In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a Class 12 student was allegedly gang-raped by more than 20 males between March 29 and April 4. Eleven of the 23 guys against whom UP Police have filed a formal complaint are unnamed. So far, the police have arrested six males.

When a friend escorted her to a hookah establishment in Varanasi’s Pishachmochan neighborhood on March 29, the woman vanished.

According to the police, the victim was preparing for admission to a sports course and regularly went to UP College for running practice. “As per her statement, on March 29, a friend took her to a hookah bar in the Pishachmochan area, where other men also joined. The girl alleged that she was drugged with a spiked cold drink and then taken to different hotels in the Sigra area, where she was gang-raped,” senior police official said.

She knew a few of the accused, including former classmates and Instagram pals. Police found the youngster after receiving a complaint from her relatives, and they also started investigating the hookah bar employees. As part of the inquiry, CCTV video from the site is being analyzed.

According to DCP Varuna Zone Chandra Kant Meena, “The girl had initially left willingly with her friend. A missing person report was filed by her family on April 4, and she was found the same day. At that time, no complaint of sexual assault was made by her or her family.”

On April 6, a report about the gang rape incident—which allegedly occurred between March 29 and April 4—was received at the Lalpur police station. An FIR was filed under the appropriate IPC provisions in response to the complaint. Additionally, DCP Meena stressed that the girl is not a minor, unlike what several media outlets have said.
