Jhalawar, Rajasthan
A tragic roof collapse at a government school in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district killed seven students and left over 20 injured, with many in critical condition. The incident occurred at Piplodi Government Upper Primary School just as students gathered for the morning assembly.
According to eyewitnesses and survivors, pebbles and dust had begun falling from the classroom ceiling moments before the collapse. Concerned students alerted their teachers, but were reportedly told to sit down and ignore it. Minutes later, the roof gave way, burying dozens of children under concrete and debris.
Rescue operations were launched by local residents and staff, who worked frantically to pull children from the rubble before emergency services arrived. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with several admitted in serious condition.
The state government has taken immediate action by suspending five school officials, including the principal, over alleged negligence. Authorities have ordered a high-level inquiry into the condition of the building and the apparent failure to act on visible warning signs.
Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar visited the site and expressed deep sorrow, announcing compensation for the families of the deceased and a government job for one family member of each victim.
Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje held the education department responsible, citing years of neglect of school infrastructure. She called for a state-wide audit of all school buildings to prevent future tragedies, especially during the ongoing monsoon season.
The heartbreaking incident has triggered public outrage across the state, with many questioning the safety of government-run educational institutions. Parents and community leaders are demanding accountability and immediate steps to ensure that such preventable tragedies do not occur again. An official investigation is now underway to determine responsibility and recommend long-term safety measures.
