Supreme Court ruling expands Trump’s power – and he intends to use it

On Friday, the Supreme Court delivered a major win to Donald Trump – and future U.S. presidents – by limiting lower courts’ authority to obstruct executive orders. President Trump was glowing as he spoke to reporters at the White House briefing room podium, describing it as a “big, incredible decision” that the administration is “extremely pleased with.” The court’s ruling affects Trump’s birthright citizenship order and also encourages him to implement numerous other policy measures that have faced temporary blockages from similar injunctions.
The Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to potentially stop automatically granting citizenship to all individuals born in the United States – at least for now. The White House must now execute its strategy, which will not be an easy endeavor.
On Friday, the supreme court of the country permitted Donald Trump’s executive order to terminate birthright citizenship to take effect in one month, while allowing lower courts to mitigate the effects on individuals who have the right to sue. Historically, states manage the issuance of birth certificates, and numerous ones do not document the parents’ citizenship. State governments led by Democrats will not be in a hurry to take action, regardless of the wishes of the Trump administration.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett, in her majority opinion, indicated that states could argue for a broader prohibition against Trump’s actions on birthright citizenship. This paves the way for significant legal conflicts ahead.
“As the States see it, their harms — financial injuries and the administrative burdens flowing from citizen-dependent benefits programs — cannot be remedied without a blanket ban on the enforcement of the Executive Order,” Barrett wrote.
“The lower courts should determine whether a narrower injunction is appropriate, so we leave it to them to consider these and any related arguments.”
President Trump described the court’s decision on Friday as a “giant win”.
He added that the “birthright citizenship hoax” has been “indirectly, hit hard” and that the decision would prevent “scamming of our immigration process”.
Trump’s Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday that the Supreme Court will decide whether the US will end birthright citizenship in October during its next session.
The court’s ruling restricts lower federal judges’ ability to issue nationwide injunctions, impacting executive actions and legislation. Both parties have criticized ideological jurists. The ruling strengthens the administration’s position on various initiatives. It allows presidents more freedom to act while maintaining judicial oversight for illegal or unconstitutional actions.
