The Supreme Court has decided not to interfere with the Jharkhand High Court’s decision to grant bail to Chief Minister Hemant Soren in the alleged land scam and money laundering case. The apex court deemed the High Court’s order to be well-reasoned, thus dismissing the plea filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The bench stated, “We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order,” indicating their satisfaction with the High Court’s judgment.
The case revolves around allegations from the ED, which claimed that Soren’s media consultant, Abhishek Prasad, admitted during the investigation that Soren had directed him to alter official records to modify the ownership details of a plot of land. Despite these allegations, the High Court found no direct evidence linking Soren to the alleged crimes.
Last month, the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Soren, pointing out that “none of the registers/revenue records” presented by the ED in their investigation “bear imprint of the direct involvement of the petitioner.” The court further observed that the overall circumstances of the case, based on broad probabilities, did not implicate Soren in the acquisition, possession, or concealment of 8.86 acres of land at Shanti Nagar, Baragain, Ranchi, which were allegedly connected to the proceeds of crime.
