Locals in Krishnanagar were shocked and alarmed when the partially burned and naked body of a young woman was found next to a Durga Puja pandal. The location is in the Ashrampara locality of Krishnanagar, fewer than 500 yards from the local superintendent of police’s office. On Wednesday morning, walkers discovered the body.
Locals reported seeing the woman’s body on the road, and police from the Krishnanagar Kotwali station arrived shortly after. Since then, the authorities have opened an inquiry, and preliminary findings suggest foul play.
The locals believe that the woman may have been murdered somewhere else, and that in order to eliminate any evidence, her body was taken to the scene and burned. Her lover has been implicated as the suspect by the deceased’s relatives, who claim he raped her, poured acid on her, and then burned her to death. The woman, an 18-year-old Class 12 student, had been reported missing since Thursday night.
According to the family, the incident was similar to the previous rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College, which sparked widespread protests and demonstrations by physicians in Kolkata and other places.
The young woman was between 20 and 22 years old, according to Sanjay Mit Kumar Makwana, Additional Superintendent of Police, Krishnanagar. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, according to another officer.
According to the PTI report, the event caused tension in the region, and protests were held in front of the Kotwali police station by members of the opposition CPI(M) and Congress parties. They insisted that the post-mortem be performed in front of a court, claiming that the woman had been raped and killed.
