Thailand, Cambodia Agree to Ceasefire Talks After Trump’s Mediation, But Border Violence Continues

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / July 27, 2025

In a dramatic diplomatic move, U.S. President Donald Trump intervened to halt escalating border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, prompting both Southeast Asian nations to agree to initiate ceasefire negotiations. However, despite high-level assurances, fresh hostilities continued along multiple sections of the disputed border, raising doubts over the truce’s viability.

Trump personally contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on July 26, urging both leaders to de-escalate the situation and warning that future trade deals with the U.S. would be contingent upon immediate peace. Cambodia swiftly responded, pledging an “unconditional and immediate ceasefire,” and assigned Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to begin coordination talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Thai representatives.

Thailand cautiously welcomed the talks but demanded proof of “genuine intention” from Cambodia. Thai officials said ceasefire discussions could only proceed if Cambodia formally initiated the process, highlighting mistrust between the two neighbors.

Despite these diplomatic gestures, violent confrontations continued into July 27. Reports indicated artillery shelling and aerial strikes across at least four key provinces—Surin and Trat in Thailand, and Pursat and Oddar Meanchey in Cambodia. The death toll from the ongoing conflict has reached at least 33, including civilians and military personnel from both sides.

More than 160,000 people have been displaced due to the clashes, with international humanitarian organizations warning of worsening conditions. ASEAN Chair and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for an emergency mediation effort, while the UN Security Council urged immediate de-escalation.

The situation remains tense, with ceasefire talks pending and both countries trading blame for continued aggression. The path to peace appears uncertain despite Trump’s intervention and global appeals for calm.
