News Mania Desk/Agnibeena Ghosh/15th August 2024
Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled the pricing for select variants of its latest SUV, the Mahindra Thar Roxx, marking its entry into the competitive SUV market. The Thar Roxx, available in a 5-door version, is strategically positioned to compete with popular models like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. While it targets these urban SUVs, its rugged off-road capabilities also make it a contender against models such as the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha.
Mahindra is on a mission to dominate the “Rs 12.50 lakh plus” SUV segment within the next three to five years, with the Thar Roxx playing a key role in achieving this goal. The company already enjoys a strong foothold in this price category, thanks to the success of its Scorpio and XUV700 models. The Scorpio currently leads the segment, with the XUV700 holding a respectable fifth position in terms of sales volumes.
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is a standout with over 60 patents to its name, showcasing the innovative engineering behind this SUV. Built on the new M_Glyde platform, the Thar Roxx boasts a structure that is not only 18% lighter but also features 41% higher bending frequency and 51% higher torsional frequency. This advanced platform incorporates over 88% high-strength steel, enhancing both durability and performance.
Designed for both on-road comfort and off-road prowess, the Thar Roxx is equipped with advanced 4X4 capabilities. It features a front independent double-wishbone suspension and a rear penta-link suspension, complemented by advanced damper technologies. The SUV also includes brake locking differentials on both the front and rear, along with an electric locking differential. The Thar Roxx is designed to tackle tough terrains, with a water wading depth of up to 650mm, making it a formidable choice for off-road enthusiasts.
In terms of size, the Thar Roxx offers a longer wheelbase at 2,850mm compared to the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, both of which have a 2,610mm wheelbase. This increased length translates to a spacious interior, with a massive 644 liters of boot space, catering to both adventure and practicality.
Under the hood, the Thar Roxx offers a variety of engine options. The more powerful variants feature a G20 TGDI mStallion petrol engine delivering 177PS and 380Nm of torque, and a D22 mHawk diesel engine with 175PS and 370Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) and a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission (AT), with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations available. The SUV also features two driving modes, Zip and Zoom, along with three terrain modes: Sand, Mud, and Snow. Additionally, the SmartCrawl and Intelliturn features enhance its off-road capabilities.
Safety is a top priority for Mahindra, and the Thar Roxx comes equipped with more than 35 standard safety features. These include six airbags, a 3-point seatbelt for all seats, and an all-LED lighting system. The SUV rides on newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels, adding to its robust and modern appearance.
Inside, the Thar Roxx offers a premium experience with dual 10.25-inch screens for infotainment and instrument panel, automatic climate control, a six-way powered driver seat, and front ventilated seats. The Harman Kardon audio system with nine speakers, wireless charging, a 360-degree surround-view system, and a panoramic sunroof further enhance the driving experience. The Adrenox technology provides over 80 connectivity features, and the SUV is equipped with Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), making it the third Mahindra model to offer this feature after the XUV700 and the new XUV 3XO.
As of now, Mahindra has announced prices only for the RWD variants of the Thar Roxx. The pricing for the AWD variants will be revealed later. Test drives are set to begin on September 14, with bookings opening on October 3. Deliveries are scheduled to commence during the Dussehra festival, making the Thar Roxx a highly anticipated addition to the Indian SUV market.
