Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has welcomed the recent meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, calling it a strong example of democratic maturity. His remarks, shared on social media, are widely interpreted as an indirect critique of his own party’s rigid post-election stance.

Tharoor wrote that democratic politics should allow intense debates and uncompromising electoral battles, but once the people deliver their verdict, leaders must set aside hostility and work together for the nation’s welfare. He added that such cooperation is essential for a healthy democracy and expressed a desire to see similar behaviour in Indian politics. He also noted that he was personally making efforts to follow this principle.

His comments come at a time when internal tensions within Congress have been increasingly visible. Tharoor has in the past faced criticism from party colleagues for remarks perceived as too appreciative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, prompting debates about his place among Congress’ traditional leadership. His latest post, praising political coexistence between ideologically opposing leaders, has added to discussions within the party.

The Trump–Mamdani meeting itself drew attention because the two leaders had publicly clashed during New York’s mayoral campaign, with Trump calling Mamdani extreme and Mamdani positioning himself as a strong critic of Trump’s politics. Despite this, the two met at the White House after Mamdani’s election victory, signalling a willingness to move beyond campaign rhetoric.

Tharoor’s response highlights his broader message: electoral rivalry should not prevent post-poll cooperation, and India’s political landscape could benefit from embracing this democratic norm.
