The Kerala government’s request to rename the southern state “Keralam” has been approved by the Union Cabinet. The action was taken just months before the state’s assembly elections.

At today’s Union Cabinet meeting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new office at Seva Teerth, the new PMO facility in Delhi, the idea is anticipated to have been approved. Since its last meeting at the South Block on February 13, this was the first Cabinet session held at the location. On June 25, 2024, the Kerala assembly passed the resolution unanimously for the second time, calling on the federal government to formally rename the state Keralam.

It took place after the Center reviewed the previous resolution, which was approved unanimously in August 2023, and suggested a few technical adjustments to improve compliance and clarity.

The resolution’s proposer, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, urged the Union government to change the state’s name to Keralam in all of the languages listed in the Constitution’s Eighth Schedule. Citing the state’s use of Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution, Vijayan has stated that the state’s name, “Keralam” in Malayalam, has a long history. He also discussed the call for the creation of a single state with Malayalam speakers that dates back to the national liberation movement. The national government has been urged by the Kerala parliament to change it immediately as Keralam in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution and in all of the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule.
