The producer of the Vijay-starring film Jana Nayagan, KVN Productions, has written to the Madras High Court Registry to ask that a writ suit against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) be withdrawn. This follows the film’s missed January 9 release date and a weeks-long legal dispute between the CBFC and the producer over the film’s certification. According to sources, as initially intended, the movie will now be sent to the revision committee.
KVN Productions’ attorney has notified the Madras High Court that they plan to drop Jana Nayagan’s writ petition against the CBFC. On behalf of the corporation, advocate Vijayan Subramanian sent the HC a letter to this effect. Justice PT Asha, who rendered the case’s first verdict, is anticipated to hear the matter on February 10. To formally withdraw the petition, the producer will require the court’s approval. According to sources, as initially planned, the movie will now be sent to the certification committee for revision.
For Pongal, Jana Nayagan, which was directed by H Vinoth and starred Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Vijay, was supposed to be released on January 9. On December 19, 2025, the five members of CBFC’s examining committee saw the movie. The producer said he was informed on December 22 that the movie will be certified UA 16+ after 14 cuts and changes. The edited film was returned for official certification on December 24 after the CBFC’s recommended modifications were made. However, the producer filed a writ petition before the HC seeking certification after waiting until January 5 to hear back from the censor board.
According to the CBFC, Chairman Prasoon Joshi received a complaint, which prompted the picture to be sent to the revision committee. A member of the examining committee filed the complaint, as was later disclosed in court. On January 9, after hearing the case, Justice Asha ordered CBFC to certify Jana Nayagan. However, Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan ordered a stay after the CBFC appealed before a bench that same day. The Supreme Court turned down the producer’s request for intervention. The bench heard the case on January 20 and overturned the single judge’s ruling on January 27.
