The Russian National Stand at the recently concluded Kolkata International Book Fair (IKBF-2024) with its wide selection of books, not only presented Russia’s literary tradition, but also international cultural and educational projects, along with Russian language learning opportunities. This year some of the books were on sale. A wide array of events and activities were held at the Russia stand and also at universities and institutes of Kolkata. Lectures and interactive sessions aimed at promoting literary and cultural exchange were conducted at Adamas University, Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute and Swami Vivekananda University.

Alexey Idamkin, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata, said, “Russia has a long-standing connection with the Kolkata International Book Fair. It has been and is of paramount importance to Russia to promote its literature and authors at this prestigious annual event. In IKBF-2020, Russia was the focal theme country. Russia Pavilion that year hosted a remarkable series of programme, with renowned contemporary authors visiting Kolkata. This year we had a very exciting programme spanning across a unique literary digital exhibition to film screening to interactive sessions with eminent Russian authors whose works are well known all over the world. We welcome your participation in celebrating this long- standing literary association between Russia and Kolkata.”

“One of the key distinguishing feature this year was that all our visiting Russian delegates were fluent in English. We shortlisted them, keeping in mind the importance of direct communication, that’s is without the involvement of interpreters. Our delegation included both senior and junior well-known authors like Alexei Varlamov, Dmitry Zakharov, Vera Bogdanova and Ragim Dzhafarov. Children’s authors Marina Boroditskaya and Natalia Tumashkova presented their popular book “Telephone Tales” which released in India in English with the wonderful prize-winning illustrations by artist Natalya Korsunskaya. The book will be interesting not only for the children but for their parents as well. Anna Esparsa who is a historian and culturologist, spoke about literary translation programmes for young translators. Dr Sonu Saini, who is a professor at Centre of Russian Studies, JNU university also accompanied us as a delegate and conducted several sessions”, added Evgeny Reznichenko, Executive Director of the Institute of Literary Translation, Moscow.

One of the major attraction at the programme, was the screening of a popular Russian animation series at Nandan film centre. ‘Jingle Kids’ directed by well-known Oleg Roy has been translated and dubbed into Bengali, which brought much excitement and joy to the children of Kolkata.
