President Joe Biden’s administration has alerted Congress of a possible $8 billion arms sale to Israel, a US source said on Friday, as Washington maintains backing for its partner, whose assault in Gaza has killed tens of thousands.

The Biden administration claims it is assisting its friend in the fight against Iran-backed militant organizations like as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen. The Gaza health ministry estimates that over 45,000 people have died, with many more believed to be buried under debris.

Diplomatic attempts have so far failed to end Israel’s 15-month-old war in Gaza, which began with a Palestinian Hamas militant strike on October 7, 2023, that killed 1,200 people and took around 250 hostages, according to Israeli estimates. Both are fervent supporters of Israel.
