Early on Thursday morning, Kamal Dhyani’s family was overcome with panic, terror, and desperation. The 25-year-old Kailashpuri resident had left his Rohini office the night before, but he never made it home. His family was terrified by every ignored call and every silent phone line.
The family was out on the streets by midnight, taking every path they could. With their hearts racing, they hurried from Janakpuri to the police stations in Sagar Pur, Vikas Puri, and Rohini, hoping to get some hint as to Kamal’s whereabouts.
Kamal’s brother reported his absence to the Janakpuri Police Station around 2.45 am. Head Constable Ramkesh joined the search right away and spent more than two and a half hours exploring the region with the family. They searched, but Kamal was nowhere to be seen.
“The family did visit PS Janakpuri, and we were searching the entire night,” the police said. “We had Kamal’s tower location from his mobile, but narrowing it down to the exact spot took time. Claims that the police did nothing are incorrect. We will investigate all stakeholders of the DJB work related to this pit.”
A woman reported a startling sight to the police at around eight in the morning. a body in a trench that was 15 feet deep. Kamal’s bike was overturned next to him when the officers arrived on the scene. According to current investigations, he died after falling into an open hole that had been excavated for Delhi Jal Board (DJB) operations.
Kamal’s family has questioned how such a dangerous excavation was left unprotected on a busy road. “It could have been an accident, but we cannot rule out foul play. Someone might have pushed him into the pit,” a relative said.
The tragedy ignited outrage on social media. The Aam Aadmi Party tweeted, “At home, the mother must be waiting for her son to return. How would that innocent mother know that an incompetent government has swallowed her son? In Janakpuri, a son lost his life after falling into this pothole on the road. The system had already died at the hands of BJP.”
AAP councillor Raminder Kaur (Ward 100) told PTI, “When I saw the photographs this morning, I felt very sad. A young man fell into a pit dug during PWD work. There were no barricades, no protective fencing, and the area was very dark. This work has been ongoing for eight months. Roads are being excavated without proper safety measures, causing repeated accidents.”
In order to establish responsibility and stop future mishaps, Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood has mandated an official investigation into the occurrence. After a preliminary investigation, three Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officers have been suspended. Deep sadness at the loss was also conveyed by the Delhi Jal Board. The board said in a formal statement that a committee had been established to look into the occurrence and that if any amount of negligence was discovered, severe measures would be implemented.
The DJB encouraged the public to report dangerous areas by calling the toll-free number 1916 and stated that routine checks of safety measures at all workplaces are still being conducted.
